SaniTrack: Turning Data into Action for Healthier Communities
Strengthening Public Health Systems Through Real-Time Sanitation Data and Community Surveillance
Sponsored By: Aion Health SL | Bo City Council | Local Schools | Community Health Volunteers
Date of Implementation: August 13 – September 15, 2025

Access to proper sanitation and hygiene remains one of the most pressing public health challenges facing many communities in Sierra Leone. Poor waste management, blocked drainage systems, stagnant water, and inadequate sanitation infrastructure continue to contribute to preventable diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, and malaria. These challenges disproportionately affect children, pregnant women, and vulnerable populations living in underserved communities.
At Aion Health SL, we believe that stronger public health systems begin with accurate data, community participation, and innovative technology. This vision led to the development of SaniTrack, a digital sanitation and hygiene tracking solution designed to improve sanitation monitoring, support rapid interventions, and strengthen community health systems through real-time public health surveillance.
SaniTrack is a technology-driven sanitation monitoring platform that enables communities, volunteers, health workers, and local authorities to collect and analyze real-time sanitation and hygiene data. Using mobile devices and digital reporting tools, SaniTrack helps identify environmental health risks such as open litter sites, blocked drains, stagnant water, overflowing latrines, and other sanitation hazards across communities.
The platform bridges the gap between communities and decision-makers by transforming local observations into actionable public health information. Through digital dashboards, analytics, and reporting systems, authorities and partners can quickly identify high-risk areas, prioritize interventions, and improve sanitation responses.
To strengthen community ownership and participation, Aion Health SL trained local volunteers as SaniTrackers to collect sanitation data across Bo City. These volunteers were equipped with practical digital skills and mobile reporting tools to monitor public spaces where sanitation challenges pose the greatest risks to health and environmental safety.
The training focused on digital data collection and reporting, public health surveillance, waste and sanitation monitoring, community engagement and hygiene awareness, and climate-smart environmental health solutions. By empowering local volunteers, SaniTrack promotes community-led action while strengthening the capacity of young people to contribute to public health innovation.
Within the first phase of implementation, SaniTrackers collected valuable sanitation and hygiene data across Bo City. A total of 56 sanitation-related cases were identified, including 19 open litter sites, 9 blocked drains, 3 stagnant water spots, 1 overflowing latrine, and 24 other public health risks.
This real-time data is already supporting evidence-based decision-making by stakeholders including Bo City Council, DHMT-Bo, schools, health facilities, NGOs, development partners, and community leaders. The availability of accurate sanitation data enables faster public health responses, improved waste management planning, and targeted interventions to reduce disease risks.
Traditional sanitation monitoring systems are often manual, slow, and inconsistent, making it difficult for authorities to respond quickly to environmental health risks. SaniTrack addresses these gaps by introducing a digital, community-centered surveillance approach that improves efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
The platform contributes to improved sanitation monitoring, increased community awareness of hygiene practices, early identification of environmental health risks, better maintenance tracking for sanitation infrastructure, stronger collaboration between communities and institutions, and climate-smart public health interventions.
At Aion Health SL, our mission goes beyond data collection. We are committed to creating healthier, safer, and more resilient communities through innovation, education, and community engagement. SaniTrack represents a step toward a future where communities are empowered with the tools and knowledge needed to protect public health and improve environmental conditions.
By combining technology with local action, we are building sustainable solutions that support cleaner environments, reduce preventable diseases, and strengthen public health systems in Sierra Leone. Together, we are turning data into action for healthier communities.
