Mobile Health Outreach Program: Delivering Hope and Healing
Expanding Access to Essential Healthcare in Underserved Communities in Sierra LeoneSponsored By: UNFPA Freetown | Aion Health SL
Sponsored By: Ole Cup Innovation Award | YES GYSD Alumni Grant (Pharmacy for Pregnant Women Initiative) | District Health Management Team (DHMT–Bo) | Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS)
Date of Implementation: February 18 - March 17, 2025

The Aion Health SL Mobile Health Outreach Program was designed to address critical healthcare access challenges in underserved rural communities such as Kalia, Kpawula, and Niagorehun Bargbo in Bagbo Chiefdom, where long distances to facilities, shortages of trained personnel, and limited medical supplies contribute to preventable illness and maternal and child mortality (problem). Led by Abubakarr Sidique Konneh, with support from Albert Dauda Sengeh and Musatapha Samuka Conneh, and implemented in partnership with the Ole Cup Innovation Award, YES GYSD Alumni Grant, District Health Management Team (DHMT–Bo), and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, the program delivers free, community-based healthcare directly to those in need (solution). Its theory of change is that bringing integrated, preventive and curative services closer to communities—while leveraging innovation and partnerships—will reduce delays in care, improve health-seeking behavior, and ultimately decrease maternal and child mortality. Using a methodology that combines mobile clinics staffed by volunteer doctors, nurses, and community health workers with laboratory diagnostics, maternal care, family planning, and health education, the program ensures both immediate treatment and long-term awareness.
A key innovation includes piloting a medical drone delivery system in Niagorehun Bargbo to transport maternal kits to hard-to-reach areas. The program’s impact includes reaching over 655 patients, conducting 300+ diagnostic tests, treating 220+ malaria cases, supporting 50+ maternal health clients, and providing family planning services to 40+ individuals, alongside distributing essential medications such as antimalarials, antibiotics, ORS, dewormers, and supplements. Resources provided through sponsor support included medical supplies, diagnostic kits, outreach logistics, trained personnel, cold-chain coordination, and community education materials. As one beneficiary noted, “Now we receive treatment and medicines right in our community—this program has brought hope to our village.” Overall, the initiative demonstrates how youth-led, technology-driven, and partnership-based approaches can strengthen last-mile healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone. The program’s impact includes training 27 adolescent girls, achieving 100% completion rates, supporting 10+ business ideas, enabling 5+ micro-enterprises (such as soap-making and catering), and reaching 300+ community members through sensitization efforts. Resources provided through sponsorship included training materials, digital tools, facilitation by expert trainers, safe learning spaces, mentorship, and community outreach support. As one participant shared, “Now, I run my own small business and help teach other girls in my village.” Overall, DigitalHER demonstrates how integrated, youth-led, and partnership-driven approaches can advance gender equality, improve health outcomes, and foster economic empowerment for girls in Sierra Leone.
