Media Highlights

Sierra Leone is a West African country known for its diverse culture, stunning landscapes, and a complex history marked by periods of civil conflict. Freetown, the capital, is a bustling city on the Atlantic coast.

Targeted UN SDG Goals

Sierra Leone has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world, and one of the highest mortality rates for children under five: out of 1,000 live births, over 13 mothers and 111 children under five die. CDC Website

Sierra Leone Healthcare System

Sierra Leone's healthcare system faces challenges with an infant mortality rate of 60.8 per 1,000 live births, a maternal mortality ratio of 1,165 per 100,000 live births, and limited access to healthcare in rural areas. Efforts are underway to improve infrastructure, address personnel shortages, and enhance healthcare services nationwide.

Maternal and Infant Mortality in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone grapples with one of the highest global maternal mortality ratios, reaching approximately 1,165 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2017. Additionally, the infant mortality rate stands at 60.8 deaths per 1,000 live births as of 2020, according to UNICEF.Tsawe M, Susuman AS. Inequalities in maternal healthcare use in Sierra Leone: Evidence from the 2008-2019 Demographic and Health Surveys. PLoS One. 2022 Oct 13;17(10):e0276102. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0276102. PMID: 36228021; PMCID: PMC9560049.

Shortage of Qualified and Well-equipped Healthcare Professionals

Sierra Leone faces a shortage of qualified and well-trained healthcare professionals, posing a significant challenge to the healthcare system. This scarcity limits the capacity to provide adequate medical care, especially in remote areas. The shortage includes a lack of skilled doctors, nurses, and other essential healthcare personnel, impacting the overall quality and accessibility of healthcare services.

Poor Health Insfrastructure in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone grapples with a significant challenge of poor health infrastructure, impeding the delivery of effective healthcare services. The inadequacy of facilities, equipment, and medical resources hinders the quality and accessibility of healthcare, particularly in remote and underserved areas. The lack of well-equipped hospitals and clinics contributes to challenges in providing timely and comprehensive medical care, impacting overall health outcomes.

Maternal and Infant Mortality

Definitions

Health: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being, in which an individual realizes their potential and can cope with the normal stresses of life.
Maternal Mortality: Maternal mortality is the death of a woman during or soon after childbirth. It is defined in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) as the death that occurs within 42 days after termination of pregnancy, due to any cause related to or not related to pregnancy.

Importance

Good health is important for individuals, communities, and countries. In Sierra Leone, maternal and infant mortality remain significant challenges, particularly due to issues such as postpartum hemorrhage, preterm delivery, and nutritional deficiencies. These mortality rates can have long-term consequences for a country's economy and social development. Improving access to healthcare, increasing awareness and education, and promoting healthy behaviors can all contribute to reducing maternal and infant mortality in Sierra Leone.

The Ebola outbreak of 2014 hit Sierra Leone particularly hard. Despite its relatively small population, there were more cases of Ebola in Sierra Leone than any other country. To be exact, there were a total of 14,124 cases in the country, including nearly 4,000 deaths. The first case was reported in May 2014, and Sierra Leone was not declared Ebola-free until February 2016. According to the World Health Organization, the virus was able to spread so widely due to the weaknesses of the healthcare in Sierra Leone. These weaknesses included too few healthcare workers, not enough oversight and a lack of resources. - Borgen Project

Our Story

Aion Health's journey is a testament to resilience and innovation, driven by the urgent need to address Sierra Leone's alarming rates of maternal and infant mortality. Founded by Abubakarr Sidique Konneh, the organization initially explored drone-based medical delivery solutions before pivoting to the deployment of mobile medical clinics, marking a pivotal shift in strategy. In a landmark virtual meeting on December 19th, 2021, Aion Health's dedicated team, including Konneh and colleagues committed to providing free, high-quality medical care to vulnerable and remote communities lacking access and resources. Their mission goes beyond mere healthcare provision; they aspire to uplift the overall well-being of these underserved communities.
Looking forward, Aion Health is embracing the future of digital health, leveraging tools like secure video call apps such as Dokta and data analysis platforms like R and Power BI to enhance their reach and effectiveness. Through strategic partnerships and collaborations, Aion Health integrates Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programs into their services, amplifying their impact and fostering healthier communities. Building strong relationships with local leaders, including mayors, district medical officers, and traditional chiefs, enables Aion Health to tailor their services to local healthcare priorities and gain access to remote areas. Future collaborations with organizations like Turning Trust and the German Ambassador's office further solidify Aion Health's commitment to innovation and partnership-driven solutions.
In essence, Aion Health's narrative is one of continuous adaptation, fueled by a steadfast commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for mothers and children in Sierra Leone. Through mobile clinics, digital health initiatives, WASH programs, and strategic partnerships, they stand as champions for a healthier future in the face of daunting challenges.

All people living in Sierra Leone are at risk of malaria. Malaria is endemic to the nation, and poses a great health risk. In fact, four out of every ten hospital visits in Sierra Leone are due to malaria. Children are at particular risk, and the disease contributes to the nation’s high number of child fatalities. However, rates of the illness are falling across the country due to preventative practices such as sleeping under insecticide treated nets. Earlier diagnoses and treatments also contribute to the lowered rates of illness. By the end of 2020, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Sierra Leone hopes to have decreased cases by 40 percent. -Brogen Project

Programs

Aion Health tackles various health challenges in Sierra Leone through a diverse range of programs. We address maternal health with ultrasound clinics and STI services. Mobile clinics bring healthcare directly to remote areas. We combat prevalent diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS through awareness, testing, and treatment. WASH programs promote clean water access, sanitation, and hygiene education. Family planning services empower individuals with reproductive choices. Community awareness campaigns educate people about critical health issues. We train healthcare volunteers and promote healthy lifestyles. Aion Health even envisions future medical drone delivery for remote areas. We also rehabilitate health infrastructure.

Corruption exists in Sierra Leone’s healthcare system. According to a 2015 survey, 84 percent of Sierra Leoneans have paid a bribe just to use government services. Additionally, about a third of the funds given to fight the Ebola crisis are not accounted for. This translates to roughly 11 million pounds, or almost 14 million dollars. Sierra Leone has a literacy rate of about 40 percent. As a result, many health care services overcharge unknowing residents for basic services. A new initiative, put together by the nation’s Anti-Corruption Commission, advises residents to report cases of bribery. -Borgen Project

Aion Health worked with AcRG and Allieu Christopher Moiwat to rehabilitate K School water pump. Our programs are gear to rehabilitate, build solar powered pump, promote WASH awareness and chlorination through engineering and public health initiatives.

Maternal Ultrasound & STI Clinic

Aion Health addresses maternal health challenges by establishing a maternal ultrasound clinic for early detection and promotion of healthy pregnancies. Additionally, our STI clinic plays a crucial role in preventing, diagnosing, and treating sexually transmitted infections, contributing to overall community health in Sierra Leone.

Mobile Medical Outreach

Aion Health conducts mobile medical outreach programs to bring essential healthcare services directly to communities in need. This initiative aims to overcome barriers to access, ensuring that individuals, especially in remote areas, receive vital medical care, health education, and preventive services. We worked with local leaders.

Aion Health prioritizes the prevention and management of malaria, tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and AIDS. Our comprehensive healthcare approach involves awareness campaigns, testing, and treatment services to combat these prevalent diseases in Sierra Leone. We aim to contribute to a healthier and more resilient community in Sierra Leone.

Water Sanitation & Hygiene

Aion Health places a strong emphasis on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives, recognizing their critical role in public health. Our programs focus on promoting clean water access, proper sanitation practices, and hygiene education to prevent waterborne diseases and enhance overall community well-being in Sierra Leone.

This investment in infrastructure highlights their commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare. Patients can look forward to a more reliable and technologically advanced experience.

Additionally, data collection apps like KoBo can streamline community health programs by efficiently gathering data during outreach initiatives. By integrating these technologies, Aion Health can transform their approach to healthcare, delivering a more accessible, efficient, and data-driven experience for both patients and the community.

Sierra Leone has a severe communicable disease burden, and a rising incidence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Aion Health combats healthcare disparities in Sierra Leone. Free mobile clinics bring medical services directly to remote communities. WASH programs provide clean water through solar-powered pumps and hygiene education. Initiatives target maternal health with free equipment donations and potential pharmacies for pregnant women. A mobile app (in development) could link patients with electronic medical records. Engaging youth in health and community development empowers future leaders. These programs directly address the challenges Sierra Leone faces.

Healthcare in Sierra Leone is an issue that is complicated by the nation’s high rates of poverty, many endemic diseases and tumultuous political history. While shocking statistics, such as the country’s low life expectancy and high maternal and infant mortality rates paint a grim picture, there are signs of progress being made, and there is potential for much more change on the horizon.
– Joshua Roberts, Borgen Projects

There is a great urban-rural divide in accessing healthcare. We want to ensure to reduce these inequalities through universal health coverage and ensuring everyone in our clinics are served with quality and equity reducing the urban-rural divide in Sierra Leone thereby reducing the health burden and logistic in transporting patients.
